On May 25, 2020, under the guidance of the traffic police battalion of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau Jiangning Branch, the tidal lane of Jinsheng road, funded by Dongshan Sub-district Office of the People's Government of Jiangning District, Nanjing and undertaken by Duolun Technology, was officially put into operation. The tidal lane of Jinsheng road is the first tidal lane in China driven by a “new energy” system, which can work continuously for 15 days, even in continuous overcast and rainy days. The total length of the lane is about 60 meters and it consists of “remote control guardrail plus signal light control”. What is a tidal lane?

Tidal lane is a reversible lane, which refers to the lane that changes the driving direction of the road according to the different traffic flow of the city in the morning and evening

I. Why tidal lane is built on Jinsheng road?

There are 14 residence communities along Jinsheng road, with a resident population of 78,000. Jinsheng road is the only access to the community, and the flows of people and vehicles are highly dense. According to the statistics of the Traffic Management Department, Jinsheng road is directed to Nanjing's old town area, and its morning peak of traffic volume of motor vehicles per hour is about 1,122, more than double the flow in the opposite direction. Moreover, this situation happens in every morning and evening, which brings inconvenience to the travel of the masses during the peak period.

For this reason, Jiangning District Traffic Management Department, together with Jiangsu Transportation Research Institute and Duolun Technology, conducted in-depth research, analysis and soliciting opinions together, fully deduced and scientifically demonstrated the feasibility of setting tidal lanes on Jinsheng road, and finally issued the “Jinsheng Road Congestion Node Improvement Plan” and the “Signal Lights and Variable Lane Signs and Other Linkage Coordination Control” sub-plan.

II. What are the “supporting measures to manage traffic jam” in tidal lane?

The “Measures” clearly indicates that on the basis of the original 4 lanes of Jinsheng road, there will be the 5th lane by reducing the lane width, and a new tidal lane will be built on the intersection of Jinsheng road-Zhongshui road to the intersection of Jinsheng road-Bian’ an street.

Meanwhile, according to the different needs of the morning and evening peak of traffic flow, and the north-south horizontal movement of the guardrail, the time-division control and accurate control are implemented to prevent traffic congestion and facilitate smooth traffic. During the morning peak period when the tidal lane moves to the south, Jinsheng road will be divided into 3 lanes from east to west and 2 lanes from west to east. During the evening peak period when the tidal lane moves to the north, Jinsheng road will be divided into 2 lanes from east to west and 3 lanes from west to east.

In addition, in combination with the actual road condition of Jinsheng road and the road network layout of the district and according to local conditions, Duolun Technology cooperated with the traffic management department to implement the delicate design and transformation of intersection channelization. It will improve the signal timing plan, increase the green signal ratio at the west entrance during the evening peak period, and help the overall construction of “Smooth Traffic in Jiangning”.
